If you are talking about the larger ones( cam sprockets) they are the same gears. Or do you mean the splined gears?

After 3 days of searching for a non-crank problem, I finally found a solution to gently tap on this famous part... something that I would have done before even opening the fuse box if there was more room in the engine compartmen... when I remember my youth with my 324 TD from 1988, I managed to hit with the hammer, driver's window open, while putting the key in and start the car on the same Time 😂.... Tomorrow I dismantle the laguna seca, spring is coming. THANKS 😁

I didn't succeed from the top. I checked the voltages at the starter terminals once again (endoscope required) Positioned at the driver's light, I passed diagonally between the original air box and the shock absorber head. With a hollow stainless steel tube, I leaned on the base of the starter (nut of the long threaded rod). a slight shock loosened the coals. replacement of the starter is planned. THANKS

I have a question about the heat shield that you install with a zip tie (3:42). Doing this job on my 2003 e46 M3, I did not find a heat shield on the starter/solenoid when I disassembled. I've looked at a couple of BMW OEM parts sites and I can't find the heat shield in any of the blow up diagrams. Is that a standard BMW part? What is its part no.? Was it installed on ALL e46 M3s?

Datsun OHC L16 L18 L20 you can make a lot of power if done correctly. Depends what you want to do , if for street or Oval track racing. Getting the correct combination flat top pistons 88mm ( valve pockets has to be cut into the pistons for clearence) The correct head, the W53 head is the best to port , flow, cc and bigger valves with racing valve springs. The racing cam is also important. Oil feed modification to motor is also important. The block inside to be sanded for better oil flow. Crank oil holes made bigger and oil pump modification. If running wet sump , sump to be modified and also oil pickup. And so the list goes on, a lot of work but the Datsun OHC motor can take a lot of punishment. And the sound it gives out of the exhaust.

I have looked at many videos of the so-called sweet spot, but I fail to see how this could have any influence on performance. #1 If BMW was doing this in the factory why wouldn't they have it marked as to the engagement spot? They certainly didn't have some guy trying to find the sweet spot on how many thousands of engines, did they? #2 When assembling the Vanos, the gear, when connected to the Vanos pistons, is pushed all the way forward (front of car) and then the hubs are locked down hub bolts. So, the helical gear will travel the same distance when running regardless of the spot they are engaged in. #3 When you take it apart, it's not already in the sweet spot, is it? If anyone knows something I'm missing, please let me know. Regardless, this is still a great video and one that I had used, along with a lot of other printed materials, to do my Vanos.

Hello, I need your help! I had the vanos unit removed, but both inlet & outlet helical gears still inside the hubs/cams. At this stage, I was turning the engine over to check timing and the inlet helical gear came out (before this happened I already marked up the helical tooth in relation to hub). However I think I turned the engine over to get the helical gear back in without realising the inlet cam was not turning but the exhaust was. Now my inlet camshaft seems to be completed out of time. I am not sure what to do? Will turning the engine over cause the valves to touch pistons if the inlet camshaft timing is way out?

Hi there! This video is incredibly helpful. One question though: before beginning the process, is there anything I should do to prime the SMG pump? I'm pretty sure that the fluid levels change depending on whether the SMG has been primed or not so just want to make sure that when I'm refilling the reservoir, I'm filling it back up to the correct level. Thanks!

Been about a year since I rebuild my 03 E46 M3 and tore down most of the motor, just wanted to update because I forgot to about doing this to my vanos system and sir thank you for showing me this , I don't have a dyno sheet or anything like that but this made a huge noticeable difference all through the powerband it revs quicker mind you the motor has over 200K on it and so does the 6 speed tranny so I baby it and never run to redline, launch or do anything crazy but the motor seems more balanced now .
